Description
Berredo, Bernardo Pereira de
Annaes historicos do Estado do Maranhão. Lisbon: Francisco Luiz Ameno, 1749
Folio (290 x 185 mm). Title page in red and black, woodcut initials, headpieces, and tailpieces; title-page soiled, minor dampstaining to lower margin of license and preceding leaf, some foxing to outer margins of a few gatherings, but overall a clean copy, a few leaves mispaginated. Modern half morocco over green cloth-covered boards, spine with raised bands in six compartments, second and fourth gilt-lettered, edges speckled red; wear at joints, spine faded, some scuffs, top edges dust-soiled.
First edition of this history on Maranhão by its future governor.
Discovered in the early 16th century, the state of Maranhão originally comprised lands from Amazonia to Ceara. Covering the state's political, religious, and military events until the year Berredo is appointed governor in 1718, Annaes's longstanding significance lies in its capture of key details of the Amazon river, colonial conflicts, trade, and missionary work.
