Autograph letter, portion (first four of eight pages), unsigned but with six references to himself in his office (“the President” (3), “the President of the U.S.” (1), “the first Magistrate” (1), and “the late Presidents of Congress” (1)), to Dr. David Stuart, [Presidential Mansion, Samuel Osgood House, 1 Cherry Street] New York, 26 July 1789


Four pages, on two folio sheets (325 x 400 mm). Old silking, separations along horizontal folds, some splitting to silk at folds. The second leaf has partial text loss at the bottom (imputed from the letter-book draft), lower edge of second sheet reinforced in the nineteenth century with a partial printed document appearing to bear the imprint of Entwisle & Son [Alexandria, VA bookseller and periodical dealer], loss on second leaf at center costing approximately 65 words.
