Description
the cartel decorated with four putti and a Chinese head, surmounted by a figure of a Chinese man holding a parasol, the bracket adorned with ram's head, the enamel dial with twenty-five cartouches, signed to the centre GOHIER A PARIS, the movement with five vase-turned pillars, silk suspension and numbered count wheel mounted on the backplate, striking on a bell, signed as the dial, the musical movement, also signed, with a fusee motor driving a pinned barrel and playing tunes on nine bells with seventeen hammers; (most bronzes a later addition)

François Goyer, cabinet maker, received master in 1740.
He established himself on the rue du Faubourg Saint-Antoine, at the signboard of l'Autruche, then on the rue de Charonne under the sign of "l'eau qui dort", specialising in the production of clock cases, clocks and cartels d'applique. He is also known to have run a clockmaking workshop.
The presence on this cartel of Goyer's signature, on both the dial and the movement, suggests that he was responsible not only for the case but also for assembling the movement. Several other clocks bearing Goyer's name on the dial have been sold, notably at Sotheby's, Monaco, 14-15 June 1981, lot 201, and Christie's, New York, 13 June 1985, lot 22.
This cartel shares several elements typical of his production, beginning with the ram figures decorating the lower section of the bracket, also found on the clock from the James Hasson collection, illustrated by S. Eriksen, Early Neo-classicism in France, London, 1974, no. 107. This cartel further closely echoes the elements found on the example sold by Piasa, Paris, 29 June 2012, lot 185.
