Description

depicting a gallant couple under a pergola

silk and wool

10 ft. 9 ½ in. by 8 ft. 6 in.; 328.9 by 259.1 cm

The present tapestry, depicting a couple beneath a pergola within an exotic park setting, closely resembles weavings produced by the workshop of Charles Vigne. Other tapestries from this workshop treat the same subject but include subtle variations, such as the addition of another courtly figure or a different selection of plants. Two comparable panels attributed to Vigne’s workshop were sold at Sotheby’s on June 23, 2021, as lots 61 and 62.
