The offered lot was presumably part of a larger set, and four chairs of identical model but with a slightly more complex stretcher composition were in the collection of Mrs John Rovensky at 151 Fifth Avenue, sold Parke-Bernet Galleries New York, 25 January 1957, lot 653, and again as two pairs Sotheby's New York, 5 April 2006, lots 419 and 420.

A design for a 'Garden Seat' with shell-form seat and back described as 'proper for Grottos' appears in Plate XXIV of the third edition (1762) of Thomas Chippendale's Gentleman and Cabinet-maker's Director. An original drawing for the engraving is in the Metropolitan Museum, New York [20.40.1(12)].
