The distinctive ground of this dish is derived from the wave and scroll motif more commonly found on the rim of Iznik dishes. Published examples showcase how Iznik potters played with motifs of block colours and white space in contrast to the tightly scrolled ground to great effect, see, for example, two dishes in the V&A (inv. nos.1141-1864 and 2016-1910), and another sold at Christie's, London, 21 April 2016, lot 193. Further related examples are published alongside the present dish by Atasoy and Raby (1989, p.248, figs. 492-6). Atasoy and Raby attribute these dishes to the work of one Iznik atelier in the 1580s who favoured an enlivened background coupled with broad outlining in their designs (ibid., p.249).

The exuberant design of this dish is most closely related to another rimless dish in the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge (inv. no.C.21-1950). That dish is decorated with comparable paired stylised leaves on a scroll ground confined within a central roundel. Here the exuberant scrolls extend across the cavetto and are left unrestrained by a rim.
