Captain Thomas Elliott, a founder and the first president of the Charitable Marine Society of Baltimore, commissioned a suite of family portraits from Charles Willson Peale, depicting himself alongside members of his immediate family, including his wife, daughter, and granddaughter. Painted circa 1796–97, the present work portrays Elliott with his granddaughter, Debora Hibernia O’Donnell. The painting later descended through the O’Donnell family before entering the collection of the Baltimore Museum of Art, where it remained from 1955 until 1981.
