Description

Anonymously composed letter, in French, to "ma tres chere Seur", 6 pages, 4to, 15 March 1692, previously folded

The letter discusses a range of contemporary Jansenist writings, most notably expressing doubt over the authorship of a chapter written on the Blessed Sacrament, apparently attributed to priest and theologian Martin de Barcos: the nephew of Jean du Vergier de Hauranne, the Abbé of Saint-Cyran. The unknown writer claims, however, that the chapter was in fact the work of another of Vergier's nephews: "I have always heard it said to Monsieur le Maitre, that this work was not by Monsieur de Barcos. He was too young at the time".

The rest of the letter mentions several significant Jansenist philosophers of the seventeenth century, including Blaise Pascal and Pierre Nicole, and also refers to "l'affaire du faux Arnauld", in which letters by Antoine Arnauld were forged by the Jesuits to trick Jansenist professors.
