George Elgar Hicks, Painter of Victorian Life, exh. cat., The Geffrye Museum, London, 1982-83, p. 58

Hicks exhibited a painting entitled A Gypsy Girl at the Grosvenor Gallery in 1877 with the same composition as Zilla. He refused several offers to sell this work, writing 'Mr Ruston and Mr T. Learmouth by great importunity induced me against my wish to make them copies (£20 each) but I did not succeed in either in giving the tender pathos of the original'. The present work depicts Annie Hearne.
