The Old Chain Pier (also known as the Royal Suspension Chain Pier) in Brighton was built in 1823 to serve as a landing stage for packet boats to Dieppe and as a tourist attraction - it featured a camera obscura. It was destroyed in a storm on 4 December 1896 and although parts of the oak foundations could still be seen at low tide in 2010 all trace has now been lost. The Chain Pier was the subject of a popular song and painted by both Turner in 1828 (Tate) and Constable.
