Sotheby's, London, 13th July 1999, lot 18.

John Linnit (or Linnet) (1785-1868) was one of the few specialist gold box makers and suppliers to the London retail trade during the first half of the 19th century. His first mark as a goldworker was entered in partnership with William Atkinson in 1809 from 15 Fountain Court, Strand and his first mark on his own in 1815. Less well-known than A.J. Strachan or John Northam, he produced on the whole, simple engine-turned boxes of good quality such as the present example.
