Painted in 1850, this winter landscape is a tour de force of Dutch Romantic painting and shows Kruseman at the height of his powers, with its balanced composition and masterful rendering of ice. The painting may be compared with another work of the same year recorded in M. van Heteren & J. de Meere, Frederik Marinus Kruseman: Painter of Pleasing Landscapes, Schiedam 1998, p. 173, no. 64.
