Dated 1532 and monogrammed with the artist's distinctive ladle symbol, upper left, this engaging portrait by Hans Schöpfer the Elder depicts Achaz Busch: the Freising Court Master. In 1514 and 1515, Busch was recorded in the Great Committee as ambassador to the Imperial Court and from 1516 onwards, he was ambassador to the Ducal Court in Munich, as well as assuming the role of regional secretary and messenger. In 1526, he was on the Grand Committee for the Munich Revenue Office and three years later, in 1529, Busch was knighted.
Schöpfer trained in Munich, where he remained all his life, being elected leader of the painter's guild in 1538. Although he was active at the Court of William IV, Duke of Bavaria (1493–1550), painting numerous Wittelsbach portraits, he likewise produced portraits of the merchant classes.
