Callow visited Frankfurt twice, once in 1838 and then again in 1852. The present drawing shows the city's quay, in its centre the Rententurm, or Customs Tower, with its corner turrets. According to his inscription, Callow made this watercolour in 1840 for his fellow painter George Elgar Hicks. Later, the work belonged to Professor Sir Albert Richardson, architect and President of the Royal Academy.
