In the handling of the buildings and clouds, the canvas stretches on the boats, the colour palette and the depiction of light, this painting is reminiscent of the work of Thomas Jones (1742–1803) during his sojourn in Naples and its environs in 1782. One such example of Jones' work from this period is today in the National Museum, Cardiff.1
