Born in Scotland, Thorburn is considered to be the greatest wildlife painter of the late Victorian and Edwardian period. According to the artist's inscription, found in the lower right of the present lot, this study appears to have been made in preparation for his painting entitled The End of the Drive, which was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1892.1
