with four legs modelled as griffins


53cm high, 71cm wide, 37cm diameter (top); 20 7/8in., 28in., 14 1/2in.

The design of these stands with griffins is exemplary of the furniture and decorative arts of the second half of the 19th century when key figures such as Ferdinand Barbedienne, Maison Marnyhac, Christofle and Servant took inspiration from diverse sources ranging from antiquity to the Orient to create new designs.


See a similar design for a stand in the manner of Barbedienne presented at Sotheby's, London, 10th November 2015, lot 190 which is identical to one in Castle Racconigi (inv. nr. R 4837).
