Toyomune Minamoto ed., Maruyama Okyo gashu [Works by Maruyama Okyo], Kyoto, 1999, plt. 157.

A serene snow-covered landscape. Crows are seen perched among the winter branches; before the vast mountain range, two small figures, one riding on the back of a donkey, traverse through the dense snow.

Okyo was based in Kyoto. His naturalistic approach to painting gave way to what came to known as the Maruyama-Shijo school, after both himself and the locale ‘Shijo’ of which he and his followers were based. Their works are characterised by their incorporation of Western realism and departure from the stylised conventions of the Kano, Tosa and Rimpa. In this work, the surge of the icy river is rendered with heightened realism, while an air of classicism is still retained through the application of trailing mist in gold pigment.
