Before two entwined trunks of snow-covered pines, thirteen ducks are depicted in flight or resting near a watery expanse. The largely undecorated gold ground surface suggests the reflection of a clear winter day on a snowy landscape.


The screen is signed at the lower right Semikawa mappa Seisei Korin ga (Painted by Seisei Korin of the later-day Semikawa). Semikawa refers to the poetic place name (utamakura) Semi no Ogawa (The Cicada Stream), a small stream running through the Tadasu no Mori Forest in Kyoto that eventually joined the Kamo River near Korin’s residence. The name is thought to have been suggested to Korin by his younger brother Ogata Kenzan (1663–1743) [see Lots 1023, 1105, and 1106]. Some scholarship suggests these works were produced in the last year of Korin’s life, possibly completed posthumously.

在兩棵纏繞的雪覆松樹前,十三隻鴨子或翔或憩於水濱。大片留白的金色地肌,宛若映照於雪景之上的晴冬倒影。


屏風右下角署有「蟬川末派 清々光琳 畫」(意為「由後世蟬川的清々光琳繪製)。「蟬川」意指詩意地名(歌まくら )「蟬の小川」,此溪流貫京都糺之森,終在光琳宅邸附近匯入鴨川。據信此名號乃由其弟尾形乾山(1663–1743年)[參見Lot 1023、1105及1106]。有學者認為這些作品創作於光琳生命的最後一年,甚或可能是身後完成。
