This view along Amsterdam's Nieuwezijds Vorburgwal is one of the city's best-known vistas. We are here looking northwards along the canal (today filled in), towards the rear of Jacob van Campen's famous Amsterdam town hall, the pediment of which is surmounted by a grand statue of Atlas. Two other versions by De Beijer of this essential Amsterdam view, with different staffage, are both in the Stadsarchief, Amsterdam. 1
