lying on the Nemean lion 's skin with his left leg crossed over his right leg, resting his head on his left hand, and holding a club in his right hand, a bunch of poppies lying on the rock

European private collection, circa 17th century (based on restoration techniques);

acquired at auction by the present owner.

The composition, faithfully reproduced by the restorer, is based on a Hellenistic original of which several other Roman copies survive: see M. Soldner, Untersuchungen zu liegenden Eroten in der hellenistischen und römischen Kunst, 1986, pp. 114ff., cat. nos. 97-110, of "Eros Istanbul" type (e.g. arachne.dainst.org/entity/1067762arachne.dainst.org/entity/1121712).
