Description

Painted at the centre with a profile bust of a young woman within a roundel and a decoration of scrolls of fruits and flowers, the reverse marked with a crossed “M”

Tin-glazed earthenware (maiolica)

33.3cm. diameter, 13⅛in.

Christie's London, 30 March 1987, lot 252;

Where acquired.

A similarly decorated stand with a crossed “M” mark on the reverse is illustrated by C. Fiocco and G. Gherardi in La ceramica di Deruta, Perugia, 1994, no.46, p.176.

The crossed M mark found on the reverse of some Deruta maiolica appears on pieces painted by various artists, in other words, the mark is not linked to a single painter. The crossed M may certainly indicate manufacture in one of the workshops belonging to members of the Mancini family (see Wilson, op. cit., 2018, pp. 80-2, with further reference).
