carved, polychromed and partly gilt alabaster; in an ebonised and gilt wooden frame inscribed: ‘DUVUS / INVELLO / LUPUS / INPACE’

Relief: 82 by 68cm.; 32¼ by 26¾in.

Private collection, Brussels;

Thence in the same family, private collection from the South of France.

This large relief depicting a coat of arms surmounted by a helmet was probably part of a funerary monument. The arms, sable with a band of the same colour, accompanied at the top by silver wolf rampant, and at the bottom by a gold and black chequered pattern, could not be identified. The motto painted on the frame, which is most likely to be read as ‘Dumus invello, lupus in pace’, and may be translated as ‘Even when attacking, the wolf remains at peace’.
