Description

painted with St. Jerome naked, holding a crucifix, kneeling in a rocky landscape and on the other side a dog hunting a boar within foliage, flowers scrolling on a white ground

tin-glazed earthenware (maiolica)

34.5cm high, 13⅝in.

Jacob Stodel, Kensington Church Street, London, from whom it was acquired in September 1990.

A similar jar, also painted with a Saint, was sold by Christie’s London, 1 March, 1993, lot 307. For this type of decoration on a white ground, which is quite rare, see the piece published by R. Perale, Maioliche da farmacia nella Serenissima, 2021 pp. 92-9.
