Similar Norwegian tankards attributed to Samuel Halvorsen Fanden and his father Halvor Tordsen Fanden are illustrated in P. Gjaerder, Norske Drikkekar av Tre, Oslo, 1982. An example attributed to the workshop of Samuel Halvorsen Fanden was sold by Sotheby's London, 6 December 2011, as lot 65. This tankard features very similar carved ball feet and inlaid bead decoration along the handle to the present lot.
