Armorial Panel

inscribed: CORDE / CREDE ORE / CONFITERE OPERIBVS / PERFICE BONIS

stained and leaded glass

23.5 by 19cm., 9¼ by 7½in.

This attractive armorial panel finds close stylistic parallels in the oeuvre of the glass painter Christoph Heilmann, who led a prominent workshop in the Swiss city of Fribourg around 1600. The motif of the Wild Man holding a star and a crescent moon is repeated in a panel from Heilmann's circle at the Musée d'art et d'histoire in Fribourg (inv. no. MAHF 3480). For the classically draped female allegory, compare a panel attributed to Heilmann himself in the same museum (inv. no. MAHF 3481).
