Cameo with Alexander the Great

agate, in a ring mount

cameo: 28mm., 1 1/8 in.

UK ring size: O 1/2

Giuseppe Girometti (1780–1851) was a renowned Italian gem engraver and medallist, celebrated for his exquisite neoclassical cameos. Born in Rome, he studied sculpture under Giuseppe Cerbara and later transitioned to glyptic art. His works, often inspired by ancient sculptures and portraits of contemporary figures, gained international acclaim. Girometti's patrons included Pope Pius VII, Tsar Alexander I, and King George IV.

As demonstrated in this cameo, Girometti perfected a distinctive blush technique, adding colour to the faces of his portraits using layers of agate. This technique is visible across many of his works, including a cameo of King George IV housed in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London (inv. no. A.7-1959).
