For almost four decades, Jules Leleu established himself on the Parisian scene as one of the leaders of the tradition of fine craftsmanship and French style inherited from past centuries.

From the prestigious Salon des artistes décorateurs to the showrooms of Maison Leleu, located at 65 avenue Franklin Roosevelt in Paris, his creations made the decorating house famous.

Photographs of the exhibitions in the salons on avenue Franklin Roosevelt bear witness to this art of grand decoration, featuring creations by the finest craftsmen of the day: furniture by Jules Leleu, carpets by his daughter Paule, ceramics by Jean Mayodon and silverware by Puiforcat.

Numerous advertisements and articles published in the press at the time illustrate the influence of the decorator on the French art scene. The quality of his art earned him several commissions and purchases from the Mobilier National to furnish the palaces of the French Republic.

Our piece, acquired from the decoration house in 1954, has remained in the family of the commissioner to this day. It is one of Jules Leleu's most prestigious creations. Its supple, elegant lines, generous dimensions, gilded bronze ornamentation and use of shagreen - a rarity for Jules Leleu - make it an exceptional piece of furniture.

Our piece was featured in the 1995 Le Galuchat exhibition at the Hôtel de Sens in Paris, which brought together the creations of the greatest 20th-century decorators.
