Inscribed on the front endpaper with a cryptic and playful message to “Mrs H.G. Wells,” signed “from the other H.G. Wells”—either a rare gesture to his wife, Amy Catherine Robbins, or, perhaps, a light-hearted nod to a woman who shared his name.
