8vo, paperback issue "10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1" on publisher's imprint page and "1 wand" repeated on p. 53; leaves very lightly toned. Original pictorial paper wrappers after Thomas Taylor; the slightest wear to the very edges, but otherwise an exceptionally fresh copy.

First edition, inscribed warmly by the author: "To John, with thanks for an amazing dinner! Very best wishes, J.K. Rowling."

This paperback issue of 5,150 copies was released simultaneously with the 500 hardback copies, both of which are confirmed by Bloomsbury to have been published on 26 June 1997. As Errington notes, these two formats together constitute the first state of the first edition.

The present copy was inscribed by Rowling at a dinner at the US Ambassador's residence, London, on 23 April 2016. She was one of fourteen people who had been invited to Winfield House during President Obama's UK visit.
