Description

Fryderyk Chopin

Autograph letter signed (“F. Chopin”), to his publisher Maurice Schlesinger in Paris, ABOUT THE NOCTURNES OP.55 AND THE MAZURKAS OP.56

requesting that he send him by the bearer of this note his six copies of Nocturnes and Mazurkas which have just been published, and expressing his wish to see him soon

…Veuillez m’envoyer je Vous prix, par le porteur de ce mot – mes six exemplaires de Nocturnes et Mazourkes qui viennent de paraitre…

1 page, 8vo (20.8 x 13.4cm), integral blank, integral autograph address-panel, [Paris], ‘Jeudi matin’ [29 August 1844?], light creasing and dust-marking at folds, tiny tear to lower margin

APPARENTLY UNPUBLISHED.

Maurice Schlesinger (1798-1871) was Chopin’s principal publisher of music in Paris between 1832 and 1845, issuing about forty of the composer's works, most of them simultaneous first, authentic editions. Given the publication dates of the Two Nocturnes op. 55 and the Three Mazurkas op.56, and taking into account Chopin's stays in Paris, a plausible date for the letter, dated only 'Jeudi matin [Thursday morning]' by Chopin, is 29 August 1844.
