(i) On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, or the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life. London: John Murray, 1860. 8vo, second edition, second issue (fifth thousand on title-page), folding lithographed plate, 32-page publisher's catalogue at end (dated January 1860), original green blind-stamped cloth with spine in gilt [Freeman's variant b] with binder's label of Edmonds & Remnants on lower pastedown, brown-coated endpapers, occasional marginal spotting not affecting text, upper hinge slightly split, extremities slightly bumped


Second edition of "THE MOST INFLUENTIAL SCIENTIFIC WORK OF THE NINETEENTH CENTURY" (Horblit).


(ii) The Descent of Man, and Selection in Relation to Sex. London: John Murray, 1871. FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE, 8vo, 2 volumes, half-titles, engraved illustrations, 16-page publisher's catalogue at end of each volume (each dated January 1871), original green blind-stamped cloth with spine in gilt with binder's label of Edmonds & Remnants on lower pastedown, dark blue end-papers, spotting to first and last few leaves of each volume, hinges splitting in both volumes, extremities slightly rubbed and frayed, minor loss at tail of volume 1


THE FIRST APPEARANCE OF THE WORD "EVOLUTION" IN ANY WORK BY DARWIN.
