Description
Pietro Ferrerio.
Palazzi di Roma ...Libro primo [-secondo]. [Rome: G.G. Rossi, c.1696-1702]
2 volumes, small oblong folio (361 x 476 mm), 105 numbered engraved plates including engraved title to each volume (44 + 61 plates), eighteenth-century half-calf, marginal dampstaining to final 2 plates of second volume, 5 inch repaired closed tear to final plate of second volume, creasing to a few other plates, extremities rubbed
"The presence of two plates with Domenico de' Rossi's imprint (plate 44 in Libro 1 and plate 27 in Libro 2) dates this impression... later than 1691, the year Domenic took over from Giovanni Giacomo. A rather later date of between 1696 and 1702 is perhaps suggested by the fact that [Giulio] Carlo Quadro is not recorded as active before that time" (BAL RIBA).
PROVENANCE:
Probably Thomas Peter Giffard (1725-1776), who made the Grand Tour in 1765 when he was painted by Batoni in Rome, of Chillington Hall, Staffordshire; thence to his son Thomas Giffard (1764-1823); thence by descent
