Description

Vellei Paterculi historiae Ro. duo uolumina nuper reperta, diligentissimeque excusa cum indice omnium quae digna sunt notatu copiosissimo. Florence: Heirs of Filippo I Giunta, 1525

 

2 parts in one volume, 8vo (164 x 98 mm). Italic type, 30 lines plus headline. Collation: [*-**8] a-z8 &8 ?8 R4 [***]8 A-H8: 292 leaves. Woodcut Giunta device on title-page and verso of final leaf. (Ink markings to title-page, scattered light dampstaining, final leaf partially detached.)

 

Binding: Contemporary Bolognese brown morocco (168 x 102 mm) by Vignette Binder ca. 1530, tooled in blind, leafy border frame surrounding lozenge and rectangle composed of three fillets with rosettes at outer angles, in center a classical head, traces of four pairs of ties, spine with three bands, compartments diapered in blind, edges stained blue and sprinkled red. (Extremities lightly rubbed, spine creased and refurbished, repairs to spine and a corners, hinges cracked, later pastedowns, without flyleaves.)


Provenance: Unidentified owner(s), inscription, "Martialis Guarasii Prioris d'Pisani," running titles in contemporary hand near end — possibly Sotheby's, London, 25-26 April 1960, lot 45 ("contemporary Italian blind-tooled dark brown morocco, roll-tooled border, in the centre of the sides a medallion bust-portrait of a young man"). Acquisition: Purchased from Libreria antiquaria Pregliasco, Turin, 2006. References: Renouard XLIX/80; Edit16 28782; USTC 836749; Decia & Delfiol p. 128, no. 186
