First edition—the Syston Park copy. Commentary on the 150 Psalms by Placido Bechigni, Inquisitor of Parma, and one of the theologians consulted by the Council of Trent. A fine example of 16th-century Italian book art, this work was printed under the supervision of Paulo Manuzio for the Academia Veneta.


4to (195 x 140 mm). Italic and Roman type, 38 lines plus headline. collation: *4 A-Z8 Aa-Tt8 (lacking final blank): 339 (of 340) leaves. Woodcut printer's device on title-page, woodcut historiated initials. (Repair to inner margin of first two gatherings, scattered staining, foxing, and browning, paper flaw to Ii5.)


binding: Nineteenth-century English green straight-grained morocco (203 x 150 mm), bound by R. Storr of Grantham, covers with borders of three gilt fillets, gilt floral roll, and gilt cornerpieces, spine with semi-raised bands in six compartments, second and fifth gilt-lettered, others with repeat filigree pattern in gilt, all edges gilt, inner dentelles gilt, lavender endpapers. (Rubbed, staining, corners bumped.)
