A RARE COPY IN A SIXTEENTH-CENTURY BINDING FOR JACQUES DE MONTHIERS (1528-1589), the lieutenant general of the bailiff of Senlis, residing in Pontoise. USTC lists just four institutional copies of this work, three in the Bibliothèque nationale de France and one in the Bibliothèque de l'Arsenal.

8vo (141 x 97 mm). Gothic type, 29 lines plus headline. collation: A-X8 AA-GG8 HH4: 228 leaves. Title printed in red and black, woodcut portrait on final recto, woodcut printer's device on final verso, woodcut initials, some contemporary marginal numeration and a number of passages underlined. (Small repaired hole to outer margin of A1-4 slightly affecting a couple of letters, marginal staining to verso of final leaf, some very occasional light stains.)


binding: Contemporary French polished calf (152 x 110 mm), gilt fillet around sides, gilt oval arabesque ornament in centre, above and below which lettered "IACOBI / DE/ MONTHIERS" and "CONS . REG. / AC / L.SILVANECT. / PONTISAR" on upper cover and "CONSVETVDO / OPTIMA" and "LEGVM / INTERPRES" on lower cover, spine with full and 2 half bands, gilt rosette in compartments, 2 brass clasps, edges gilt. (Expertly rebacked and recornered, retaining most of original spine, some small stains to binding, endleaves lacking.)
