RIDOLFI, PIETRO. Historiarum seraphicae religionis libri tres seriem temporum continentes, quibus brevi explicantur fundamenta, universique ordinis amplificatio, gradus, et instituta; nec non uiri scientia, virtutibus, et fama praeclari. Venice: Francesco De Franceschi, 1586
FIRST EDITION WITH THE ARMS OF THE CARDINAL CHARLES II OF BOURBON-VENDÔME.
Pietro Ridolfi (1536-1601) served as Bishop of Venosa from 1587 to 1591 and Bishop of Senigalia from 1591 to 1601. First edition of his life of Saint Francis and history of the Franciscan order. This copy contains the copperplate engraved frontispiece by Girolamo Porro (1520-1604), but this, along with the dedication leaf, was probably supplied from another copy.
These volumes bear the arms of Cardinal Charles II de Bourbon-Vendôme (1562-1594), advisor to Henri III of France. The same arms and motto are found on small number of extant volumes, including the binding of an illuminated manuscript in the Bibliothèque nationale de France (BnF Latin 6310) and, in the present sale, lot 1863 (Vignier).
Folio (356 x 218 mm). Roman type, 56 lines plus headline. collation: πA4 b8 c6 A-K6 L4 M-2B6 2C4 2D-3F6 3*G6 3G-3M5 (b4 missigned as a4): 367 leaves (only, of 368; lacking terminal blank). Engraved frontispiece title, woodcut illustrations throughout, woodcut initials and ornaments, some passages marked in pencil. (Title-page and dedication leaf likely from another copy, light marginal spotting, paper flaws to some margins.)
binding: French red morocco (364 x 228 mm), triple gilt fillet border around sides, flat spine with triple gilt fillet frame, horizontal 4-line gilt title at head, at centre the arms of Charles II de Bourbon-Vendôme, at tail a medallion with a lily and the motto "SVPERAT CANDORE ET ODORE", edges gilt. (With old repairs to spine ends, hinges and corners.)
provenance: Cardinal Charles II de Bourbon-Vendôme (1562-1594), arms on spine—early initials on title and dedication leaf (likely from another copy)—inscription "ex bibliotheca Domus S(anc)ti Caroli Paris(iensis)" (Maison Saint-Charles Borromeo) on dedication leaf (likely from another copy). acquisition: Purchased in 1990 from Librairie Sourget, Chartres. references: USTC 852551; Edit16 CNCE 28185
