First part (only, of three) of this elegantly produced vernacular edition of Plutarch, IN A PARISIAN BINDING BY THE SALEL BINDER.

4to (214 x 154 mm). collation: A-2P8 (2P8 blank): 304 leaves. Title-page with woodcut border, woodcut initials and in-text woodcut illustrations. (Dampstaining at upper margin from L8 to end of text-block.)


binding: Parisian brown morocco (223 x 162 mm), early 1540s, by the Salel Binder, originally silvered and now oxidised, outer frame of multiple blind fillets around sides with fleuron at outer angles and trilobes along outer border of frame, bud and leaves at inner corners, inside frame lozenge composed of circular punches flanked by multiple blind fillets, elongated leaf tools in interstices between lozenge and border frame, in centre a quadrilobe cartouche with a fleuron finial at top and bottom and containing a large complex fleuron, traces of 4 pairs of fabric ties, spine with 6 full and 2 half bands, small repeated tool in compartments, green end bands, edges gilt. (Old repairs to spine ends and joints, upper joint starting, extremities slightly rubbed.)
