FIRST EDITION OF THE FIRST HISTORICAL ACCOUNT OF THE THEN-NEWLY ERECTED VATICAN LIBRARY, built in 1588, illustrating the ambitious iconographic program that still adorns its rooms. Alongside descriptions of frescoes and statues in their order of appearance, Mutio Pansa (1565-1628) writes on the origins of the book and paper, the ecumenical councils and famous libraries of the past, as well as the ancient alphabets and their mythical inventors.

4to (220 x 158 mm). collation: *4 A-2Y4: 184 leaves. Title-page with woodcut printer's device of a phoenix, repeated on recto of final leaf, woodcut initials and printer's ornaments. (Some marginal dampstaining.)
