FIRST EDITION, FIRST STATE, with all the issue points of the first state, including the pagination error which skips from page 144 to 147. Inserted into this copy are the second state pages 141 to 146, bound between page 144 and 147, adding maxims 313-316, a woodcut ornament and other minor variations.

12mo (132 x 75 mm). Roman type, 23 lines plus headline. collation: ā12 ē12 A-G12 (G1-3 inserted from second state; ē12v, G10v, G11 and G12 blank): 108 leaves. Engraved frontispiece by Picart, woodcut initials and ornaments. (Slight even browning.)


binding: Dark red morocco (144 x 86 mm) gilt in period style by Eugene Bernard, 1916, triple gilt fillet around sides, spine with 5 bands, title in second compartment, others gilt, gilt edges of covers, gilt inner dentelles, edges gilt, marbled endpapers, in a red crushed morocco box.
