BOUND FOR CARDINAL PERRENOT DE GRANVELLE BY THE FUGGER BINDER, the largest producer of fine bindings in Venice, named on account of his work for Johann Jakob Fugger. See catalogue note for lot 1607 (Boccaccio) for a full bio-bibliographical note on Granvelle.
As with other vernacular Italian books bound for Granvelle by the Fugger Binder, the present volume is bound in olive-green morocco tooled in silver. Another distinctive feature is the blue band painted across the gilt fore-edge, designed to replicate the appearance of classical libraries. Granvelle's books made their way by descent to Count de La Baume-Saint Amour (d. 1707) who sold a large portion of Granvelle’s library in 1664 to Jean-Baptiste Boisot (1639-1694), Abbot of St.-Vincent at Besancon. The upper endleaf of the present volume has been removed, possibly in order to remove the ownership inscription of Boisot.
3 works in one volume, 8vo (154 x 104 mm). Italic type. collation: A-O8; A-N8; *8 A-R8 S4: 112 + 104 + 148 leaves. Title-page to each volume with woodcut device, sixteenth- or seventeenth-century shelfmarks at head of first title-page.
binding: Venetian olive green morocco (158 x 116 mm), by the Fugger Binder for Granvelle (Piquard’s Type A), richly silvered, multiple rectangular borders formed by silvered and blind fillets, frame containing repeated curved leafy tool, small star and rosette tool, bud and leaves at outer angles, large arabesque corner pieces, undulating lozenge formed by single fillet containing cross formed by single fillet with stirrup finials at top and bottom and fleur-de-lys at sides, rosette in centre, traces of 4 pairs of blue and white alternating ties, spine with 3 full and 4 half bands, edges silvered, two blue title labels painted across edges between ties, 2 line title lettered in gold “EZZELINO|TIRANNI” and “HISTOR|VENET”. (Extremities rubbed with minor loss to spine.)
