FIRST AND ONLY EDITION of the most important eighteenth-century typographic manual, by the well-known French typefounder, Fournier le Jeune, in a contemporary tree calf binding.
The first volume describes the processes of typefounding and punchcutting, with illustrations of the tools involved. The second includes 101 alphabets, both ancient and modern, five folding engraved plates of music, and other vignettes, borders and ornaments. The two frontispieces are by Gravelot and Sève, and copper-engraved by Fessard.
2 volumes, 8vo (160 x 103 mm). Roman and italic type, 25 lines plus. collation: (1) *-2*8 (engraved frontispiece on unsigned plate after *1) A-V8 X4 (2) (engraved frontispiece on unsigned plate before *1) *-3*8 1-118 124 13-198 2020 (quire 12 and the last 16 leaves of quire 20 are folding plates): 181 + 193 leaves. Engraved frontispiece to both volumes (each on unsigned leaf), titles within woodcut borders, 5 folding leaves with music (one printed in red and black), 16 copperplate engravings. (Some spotting, a few leaves in volume 2 with old repaired closed tears at upper margin.)
binding: Contemporary tree calf (1645 x 108 mm), borders and spine painted black, spine gilt, red edges, marbled endpapers. (First volume with slight loss to spine label and neat restoration to boards.)
