FIRST EDITION of the author's final comedy, a clean copy with wide margins.


Pierre Corneille (1606-1684) was a French poet and playwright. This play in five acts was first performed at the the Théâtre du Marais in 1636, three years before the first edition was published. This work marked a turning point in the author's oeuvre, as he previously composed both comedies and tragedies but, after L’Illusion Comique, only wrote tragedies.


This copy belonged to Maxime Denesle (1906-1989), once Vice President of the A.I.B., along with lot 1737 (La Fontaine).

4to (210 x 150 mm). Roman and italic type, 27 lines plus headline. collation: π4 A-Q4: 68 leaves (final two leaves blank, N2 missigned as M2). Woodcut arms on title-page, woodcut initials and head- and tailpieces, wide margins.


binding: Modern plain dark blue Jansenist morocco (215 x 160 mm) signed E. Carayon, interior gilt dentelles, spine with 5 bands, gilt title in second compartment, marbled endpapers, edges gilt. (Head of spine very slightly rubbed.)
