Description

Height 62.5 cm, 24⅝ in.

Collection of George Sheridan (1923-2008), acquired in Paris, London and New York from the 1960s onwards, and thence by descent; a passion nurtured from his friendship with Professor Samuel Eilenberg (1913-1998), who donated his collection to the Metropolitan Museum in New York in 1987.

The body of this imposing wood figure of Amitabha Buddha is painted red according to iconographical specification, and his principal attribute, the patra begging bowl, is painted black by convention. Wood is often employed for Buddhist sculpture away form bronze-casting centres, in outlying high altitude border regions such as Dolpo.
