Description

Height 11.8 cm, 4⅝ in.

Collection of George Sheridan (1923-2008), acquired in Paris, London and New York from the 1960s onwards, and thence by descent; a passion nurtured from his friendship with Professor Samuel Eilenberg (1913-1998), who donated his collection to the Metropolitan Museum in New York in 1987.

Compare the vajraparyankasana seated posture and the identical hand gestures of a ca. 9th century Javanese silver figure in the Linden Museum, Stuttgart, depicting the bodhisattva Manjushri holding the stem of a blue lotus supporting a bound sutra, see Jan Fontein, The Sculpture of Indonesia, Washington and New York, 1990, cat. no. 47. Compare the distinctive lotus pedestal and stepped plinth style of a 9th or 10th century Shri Devi in the Museum Sono Budoyo, Yogyakarta, ibid., cat no. 48.
