Description

Height 6 cm, 2⅜ in.

Collection of George Sheridan (1923-2008), acquired in Paris, London and New York from the 1960s onwards, and thence by descent; a passion nurtured from his friendship with Professor Samuel Eilenberg (1913-1998), who donated his collection to the Metropolitan Museum in New York in 1987.

Yama appears in this rare bronze group seated at ease on his buffalo vahana, with right leg folded up and the left pendant. Although heavily encrusted, the figure is seen to be wearing a crown, necklace and armbands, and with a loin cloth flowing over the legs and onto the rump of his mount. His right hand rests on his knee while holding a ritual implement in his left, possibly the pasa, or noose, with which Yama is associated. The deity’s simple halo is a common feature of the period.
