Description

Height 11 cm, 4¼ in.

Collection of George Sheridan (1923-2008), acquired in Paris, London and New York from the 1960s onwards, and thence by descent; a passion nurtured from his friendship with Professor Samuel Eilenberg (1913-1998), who donated his collection to the Metropolitan Museum in New York in 1987.

The four-armed standing figure of Vishnu with his characteristic attributes of conch shell and lotus in his right hands and chakra wheel and mace in the left, stands on a raised platform supported by lotus pedestal with the unusual feature of a Shiva lingam at the apex of the flaming aureole.
