Description

La Collection Deletaille

Maya Stone Vessel, Ulua Valley

Postclassic, circa AD 800 - 1100

Height: 4 ¼ in (11 cm)

Emile Deletaille, Brussels, acquired by January, 1970

Thence by descent

These drinking vessels are distinct for their low relief carving of fluid volute motifs featuring zoomorphic handles, as in these stylized, rampant felines with bared fangs.

Vases of this style are associated with sites near Travesía in the Ulúa Valley, in the Gulf of Honduras, and were traded as luxury goods throughout the Mexican corridor from Guanacaste in Costa Rica to the Mayan lowlands.

For the general type, see Pal Kelemen, Medieval American Art, New York, 1944, pls. 94-95.
