Description

La Collection Deletaille

Maya Polychrome Vessel

Late Classic, circa AD 550 - 950

Height: 7 ½ in (19 cm)

John Fulling, Pompano Beach, Florida

Emile Deletaille, Brussels, acquired from the above on June 4, 1976

Thence by descent

The highly graphic depiction is associated with Maya art from the Honduran region. The artist used reddish-brown and black for the backgrounds and glyph bands to fully distinguish each panel of the identical seated lords. A large cross-section of a conch shell forms the massive backrack and design on the tunic. Narrow mirror icons mark their arms, denoting their elevated status. The top, bottom, and vertical glyphs similarly use the respective red and black coloration. The base of the vase bears an inked flourish, perhaps the mark of the artist or painter.
