FIRST EDITION, 10 parts in 6 text volumes (volume 5 in 2 parts, volume 6 in 3 parts, plus an independent 4th part published in 1920), folio (320 x 250 mm), plus 3 map volumes (397 x 290 mm), text: c.426 plates and maps in volumes 1-6, plus further in-text illustrations, many leaves uncut, original printed paper wrappers; maps: 112 double-page or folding maps, housed in original card portfolios with green ties; together housed in 7 modern custom-made perspex boxes, wrappers very fragile, with tears to wrappers of some volumes (especially to backstrips), many gatherings loose; sold not subject to return.
ONE OF 300 FIRST-EDITION COPIES OF HEDIN'S GROUNDBREAKING WORK. Based on the findings of Hedin's second of four expeditions to Central Asia between 1893 and 1935, this work details his exploration of the Chinese region of Lop Nor, displaying maps of lake Lop Nor, and the remains of ancient kingdoms once located on its shores.
